Winter blues and our desire to experience some isolated travel took us on a relaxing getaway to the paradise of the Maldives. We kept our bags light; a couple of books, sunglasses, breezy linens and of course our most favorite swimwear
Vakkaru's contemporary luxury, over-water, pool villas are perfectly accentuated by the natural beauty of the Indian Ocean. Located in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll, the surrounding marine ecology inspires all things sustainable at the resort.
Whether soaking in the tub, reading on the deck, relaxing in the over-water hammock, or swimming in the villa's private pool, you can find yourself totally immersed in the crystal-clear, turquoise waters, as everything seems to blend seamlessly into the sea.
Despite being on an island, idyllic for relaxation, the opportunities for spontaneous activities are endless. The excursions here are timeless such as snorkeling, diving, sunset boat trips and simply biking around the island through palm tree lined pathways that open into wide, powdery, sandy beaches.
The famous island of Baa Atoll is known to have the most beautiful, powder-soft white sands in all of the Maldives, deep blue holes and the house reef with its unique marine biodiversity. Venture out to sea by kayak, and you will find yourself on a deserted sand bank, not too far from shore.
A quick rinse and a change of clothes into resort nightwear brings you to explore the gastronomic excellence the Maldivian island has to offer. Known for impeccable cuisine and excellent cocktails, our memorable dinners were a fusion between Asian and European inspiration, followed by a private, breezy, open-air beach cinema setting to end the evening.
Just before dinner, the Lagoon Bar is a must-stop for cocktail hour. A stylish lounge oasis provides breathtaking sunset views, which are best enjoyed while sipping on the bar's signature passionfruit cocktail.
For ultimate relaxed luxury, we could not pass up the over-the-sea spa where the sound of the water combined with tranquil music awakens all senses. The massage beds sit on a glass floor over the sea offering entrancing views of the coral below. While there are many spa treatments to choose from, we opted for aromatherapy and deep tissue massages. To end the wellness experience, the spa features a private serenity deck, and two whirlpools to take in the view.
We will miss beginning our mornings with yoga flows overlooking the Indian Ocean and enjoying floating breakfasts immersed in the infinity pool, but during winter, it is holidays such as this that provide the ultimate way to reset and better prepare us for our normal day to day.
Thank you for exploring with us. If you've traveled to the Maldives, we'd love to hear about your experience in the comments below!
